In a landmark announcement, U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand revealed $15 million in federal funding awarded to SUNY to install up to 350 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across campuses in New York State. This initiative, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Grant Program, will significantly enhance access to EV charging for students, faculty, and surrounding communities, furthering New York’s clean energy goals.
Driving the Charge Toward Sustainability
Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act, led by Senator Schumer, the funding will allow SUNY to install both DC fast chargers and Level 2 chargers, some integrated with solar canopies and battery storage. These installations will support the growing demand for EVs, reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and encourage the transition to EVs for campus vehicles. Senator Schumer described this initiative as a major win for students, teachers, residents, and visitors to SUNY campuses, emphasizing the convenience and accessibility it will bring.
Expanding EV Access Across New York
SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. expressed gratitude for this pivotal investment, emphasizing SUNY’s leadership in climate action. The deployment of 350 dual-port charging stations will result in 700 chargers strategically placed on SUNY’s 64 campuses. These campuses serve as community hubs, making them ideal locations for accessible and convenient EV charging. This effort will enhance SUNY’s role as a leader in climate action, provide vital infrastructure to underserved and disadvantaged communities, and pave the way for broader adoption of EVs statewide. Senator Gillibrand highlighted the impact of this investment, noting its importance in reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change.
