Intern Spotlight: Where Are They Now? | Katie Doran

At PISO, we are committed to fostering a nurturing environment that prepares our interns for the diverse challenges they’ll face in their future careers. In this edition of our Intern Spotlight: Where Are They Now? series, we are excited to feature Katie Doran, daughter of owner John Doran. Watching PISO grow from its inception, Katie’s involvement over several summers has helped shape both her professional aspirations and personal growth. Her journey from a young observer to an intern, and now a promising medical researcher, underscores the profound influence our internship program aims to provide.

Here’s what Katie had to say about her time at PISO and the pivotal role it has played in her academic and professional development:

“As I look back at my time with PlugIn Stations Online, I am nothing but grateful for the time I spent over several summers with the company. Prior to my work at PISO, I watched it start, and grow to what it is today. In middle school, I watched my father take a leap of faith by focusing on PISO full-time. It was this leap of faith that allowed me to believe in myself and has assisted me on my journey to becoming a doctor.

Working within the office, I had the opportunity to learn key skills that I have been able to apply to my education and further professional opportunities. For example, within my first summer, I was tasked with customer relations and scheduling. The training on how to speak with customers early in my career provided an ability that I have been able to extend into my education, as a dual biochemistry and genetics major at Clemson University. In my spring semester, I joined a chemical engineering research group, focusing on the directional migration of breast cancer cells. Within the semester I presented my research via poster session at a university conference. In doing so, I was able to harness the abilities that my time at PISO provided me and assist in giving a concise background into what is otherwise considered a niche and complex topic.

My time with PISO has been a valuable addition to my career as well. This summer, I am an intern at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The interactions I had and the skills I was taught throughout my time at PISO are what helped to get me here, and if anyone were to ever ask what it means to be an intern of PlugIn Stations Online, I would say it is to know you are valued and are apart of a family that is ready to prepare you for whatever comes next in your life.”

Katie’s reflections vividly illustrate the rich, supportive environment we pride ourselves on at PISO. Her seamless transition from an intern learning the ropes to a confident researcher at NIH highlights how our programs equip young professionals with the necessary tools to excel in highly specialized fields. We are incredibly proud of Katie’s accomplishments and are thrilled to have played a part in her journey towards a career in medicine. Her story is a brilliant example of how our interns carry forward the values and skills learned at PISO into their diverse career paths. We eagerly anticipate the future successes of all our interns, who, like Katie, are poised to make impactful contributions in their respective fields.
