For those considering the installation of Level 2 EV chargers in New York, now is the time to act. National Grid’s Level 2 funding officially ran out last month, marking the end of its five-year program that helped cover a percentage of electrical and civil work costs for Level 2 charging projects. With National Grid now placing all new funding applications on a waitlist, customers must turn to alternative funding sources before they face similar roadblocks. However, DC Fast Charger funding is still available through National Grid, making it a viable option for high-powered charging solutions.
Secure Funding Before It’s Too Late
Fortunately, other utility providers across New York State still have Level 2 funding available, but it won’t last forever. The remaining utilities—Central Hudson, NYSEG, RG&E, PSEG LI, and Con Edison—are expected to continue offering funding until the end of 2025 or until they reach their plug count. To maximize savings, pre-approval is crucial. The sooner applicants are submitted, the better the chances of avoiding potential waitlists or missing out altogether. Head to the EV-Make-Ready Program webpage for more information.
Additional Incentives Still Available
Even though National Grid’s Level 2 funding has closed, there are still ways to offset project costs. NYSERDA’s incentive program remains open, offering financial assistance that can be stacked with utility funding. NYSERDA funding helps to cover a percentage of the cost of the chargers while utility funding helps to cover a percentage of the electrical and civil work associated with installation. Additionally, the IRA C30 tax rebate provides up to a 30% tax credit for Level 2 charger installations across New York State. National Grid customers should note they can still benefit from NYSERDA and IRA C30 credits, as well as the remaining funding for DC Fast Charging projects.
