PlugIn Stations Online Featured in Times Union for Strategic Growth Amid Tesla Layoffs

We are proud to have been highlighted in a recent Times Union article, showcasing PISO’s strategic growth in the wake of Tesla’s significant workforce reductions. The article underscores how our company has seized the opportunity to strengthen our team and expand our reach within the electric vehicle infrastructure sector.

Leveraging Tesla Talent

Following Elon Musk’s announcement of a 10 percent workforce reduction at Tesla, which included over 300 employees from the Buffalo facility, PISO swiftly hired three former Tesla employees. This move has allowed us to leverage their expertise and bolster our capabilities without the need for extensive training.

The Strategic New Hires

President and Founder John Doran highlighted the strategic advantage of these hires, stating, “We took that as an opportunity to pick up some really high-quality people that were in the industry and that we didn’t have to train.” Among the new recruits are Lisa Appelbaum, a commercial leader instrumental in developing over 120 DC fast ports across New York, Benny Tortorici, a technical engineer with experience at National Grid and the New York Power Authority, and Connor Lyons, who will focus on project management and efficiency.

Bridging the Gap

Doran sees Musk’s decision to step back in the Supercharger field as an opportunity to take over projects neglected by Tesla and to expand our footprint more rapidly across the East Coast. Tesla’s pullback has created gaps in the market that PISO is eager to fill, ensuring that the growing demand for reliable EV charging infrastructure is met. For instance, representatives of Stewart’s Shops convenience store chain were unable to reach anyone at Tesla, just as they were getting ready to open a new Tesla charging station at a store in Glenmont. While they have since been able to get in touch with the Tesla team, there likely will be other projects where PISO can pick up the slack, and our team will be keeping a diligent eye out for those opportunities.

Addressing Charger Anxiety

Despite challenges such as shortages of key components like transformers, PISO is determined to enhance its network and address what Doran refers to as “charger anxiety”—the need for fast, reliable, and cost-effective charging options. As we expand our network and services, our commitment to providing top-tier charging solutions for EV drivers remains unwavering.
