JFK Terminal 4 is embarking on a transformative journey to enhance its ground service operations by shifting from fossil fuel to electric ground support equipment (eGSE). The project seeks to modernize the terminal’s fleet while maintaining operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.
Key Highlights
- Partnered with NYPA to design and procure compliant charging stations.
- Installed eight total eGSE chargers at 4 gates within Terminal 4.
- Managed extensive TCAP process, ensuring all protocols were followed.
Breaking Ground
The primary challenge posed by JFK Terminal 4 was transitioning its ground service equipment to electric while complying with strict regulations set by the Port Authority of NY/NJ/IAT. This transition required meticulous planning and adherence to rigorous guidelines, processes, inspections, and protocols – an area PISO has a proven track record.
Site Work
In collaboration with NYPA, PISO designed and procured charging stations that met all regulatory requirements. The project scope included the installation of two eGSE chargers at four gates, encompassing excavation, electrical work, and fiber runs. PISO managed the engineer of record to ensure all design requirements were met, inspections were passed, and documentation was meticulously handled, submitted, and passed.
Finished Product
Eight Electric Ground Support Equipment (eGSE) chargers were successfully installed and commissioned at four gates within JFK Terminal 4 which is home to Delta Air Lines. They will be utilized by Delta Air Lines’ newly converted electric ground support equipment and are also compatible with other airport vehicles. The collaboration with NYPA and adherence to the Port Authority’s protocols and parameters ensured a smooth and compliant transition, reinforcing JFK’s commitment to sustainable and efficient airport operations.
