Creating One of The Busiest DC Fast Charging Sites in NYC
At LaGuardia Airport, existing EV charging options were limited to Level 2 chargers located throughout airport garages, leaving rideshare drivers, travelers, and long-range EV drivers without access to fast charging on-site.
To address this challenge, PlugIn Stations Online (PISO) partnered with the airport team and the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to design and build one of the busiest DC Fast Charging hubs in New York City.
Breaking Ground on Airport EV Infrastructure
LaGuardia Airport needed a high-capacity EV charging solution capable of supporting the growing number of rideshare and commercial drivers operating at the airport daily. However, installing fast charging infrastructure at an active international airport presented significant operational and logistical challenges.
The project required the design and construction of a 12-station DC Fast Charging hub that taps into two existing 5KV power lines beneath Runway Drive. PISO worked closely with the Port Authority and NYPA throughout the process. Additionally, it was crucial that the systems and operations remained uninterrupted during construction.

The underground power lines involved in the project support essential airport infrastructure, including the control tower and fire systems, making precision planning and coordination critical.
DC Fast Charging Site Work
PISO led the full design-build process for the project, delivering a complete DC Fast Charging solution tailored to the airport’s operational requirements.
The project included:
- Installation of 12 DC Fast Charging stations
- Design and construction of a dedicated 5KV substation
- Integration of two switchboards, a low-voltage transformer, and six power cabinets
By managing both the engineering and construction components of the project, PISO ensured the charging hub could deliver the high levels of power required for fast, reliable EV charging in a demanding transportation environment.
The Result: A High-Performance EV Charging Hub

The completed charging hub successfully brought DC Fast Charging capabilities to LaGuardia Airport for the first time, significantly improving accessibility for Uber drivers, commercial fleets, travelers, and long-distance EV users.
The project also strengthened PISO’s ongoing relationship with the New York Power Authority while expanding its experience supporting large-scale infrastructure projects with the Port Authority system following previous work at JFK Airport.
Today, the site has become one of the busiest DC Fast Charging locations in New York City, with an average of nine charging stations occupied at any given time.
