Enhancing Truck Charging Infrastructure
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) aimed to modernize a truck rest stop area within the Port of Newark to accommodate DC Fast Chargers for electric semi-vehicles used to transport freight throughout the port. This project sought to support the transition to electric vehicles in freight transportation, addressing the need for efficient and reliable charging infrastructure for heavy-duty trucks.
Key Highlights
- Installed a 4-charger DC Fast site at the Port Newark Truck Rest Area on Marlin St.
- Designed a site tailored to high-profile and high-weight vehicles.
- Incorporated raised platforms for access and flood mitigation.
- Installed a full lightning protection system.
- First-time collaboration between PANYNJ and PISO.
Breaking Ground
PISO faced the challenge of transforming a truck rest stop to support electric semi-trucks while addressing specific needs for extra large, high-profile, high-weight vehicles, and navigating flood zone considerations. The transition required a custom, thoroughly planned design to ensure the infrastructure met all operational and environmental requirements.
Site Work
PISO leveraged its extensive expertise to design and construct a 4-charger DC Fast site specifically tailored to large trucks at the Port Newark Truck Rest Area on Marlin St. The project involved creating a layout that accommodated the unique requirements of heavy-duty vehicles and included raised platforms to mitigate flood risks. About 150 yards of concrete was poured to ensure proper protection of underground utilities and helical piles were installed up to 37′ deep to support concrete islands. Every aspect of the design was meticulously planned and executed to ensure functionality and compliance with the port’s standards.
Final Product
PISO successfully installed and commissioned the 4 charger DC Fast charging site at the Port Newark Truck Rest Area with a full lightning protection system, providing a commercial solution for high-speed charging of heavy vehicles. The project marks another milestone in PISO’s commitment to supporting the transition to electric transportation within critical infrastructure hubs like the Port of Newark.
