To meet growing demand for public EV charging in eastern Queens, PISO partnered with the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and Electrify America to design and build an 8-dispenser DC fast charging site in Bayside, Queens, breaking ground in April 2025.
The Challenge
- Coordinating permitting and approvals across NYPA, NYC DOT, and Con Edison in a dense, high-traffic Queens corridor
- Working through the multiple layers of municipal review required to build in New York City, widely regarded as one of the most demanding regulatory and construction environments in the country
- Encountering unknown subsurface conditions and existing utility infrastructure once excavation began
- Securing the space and approvals needed for a large-capacity Con Edison utility connection on a constrained urban site
The Solution
- Full turnkey design/build execution, from engineering and permitting through construction and commissioning
- Construction of an 8-dispenser DC fast charging site for public use
- Installation of a Con Edison M-11 utility vault, excavated to a depth of approximately 9 feet to bring utility power onto the site
- Ongoing coordination with NYPA, Con Edison, and NYC DOT to keep the project moving through each stage of approval
The Impact
The Bayside project added meaningful public DC fast charging capacity to eastern Queens and reflected PISO’s ability to deliver complex, high-capacity infrastructure on a tight schedule in one of the most demanding construction environments in the country. The project reinforced PISO’s growing reputation as a trusted design/build partner for public EV charging infrastructure across New York City.
