EVolve Canarsie: Complex & Seamless EV Charging

To extend high-capacity public charging into southeastern Brooklyn, PISO partnered with the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and Electrify America to design and build an 8-dispenser DC fast charging site in Canarsie, Brooklyn.

The Challenge

  • Coordinating a multi-agency permitting process across NYPA, NYC DOT, and Con Edison in a Brooklyn neighborhood with its own set of local review requirements
  • Navigating New York City’s regulatory process, consistently one of the most complex in the country for infrastructure construction
  • Uncovering subsurface obstructions and existing utility lines once excavation began, which called for on-the-fly redesign
  • Delivering an 8-dispenser site’s worth of electrical capacity to a location without existing high-capacity utility infrastructure in place

The Solution

  • End-to-end turnkey execution, from engineering and permitting through construction and commissioning
  • Construction of an 8-dispenser DC fast charging site for public use
  • Installation of a Con Edison M-11 utility vault, sized and excavated to a depth of approximately 9 feet to bring utility power to the site
  • Close coordination with Con Edison, NYPA, and NYC DOT throughout design and construction to work through issues as they came up

The Impact

The Canarsie project extended PISO’s public charging network into southeastern Brooklyn and demonstrated the firm’s ability to deliver the same high-capacity infrastructure across boroughs with different regulatory and utility landscapes. The project added to PISO’s growing track record as a leading DC fast charging design/build firm in New York City.
